The Salgado & Associates team has decades of experience with organizations that work with families, educators, parents, communities of color, elected officials, low-income constituents, and other marginalized members of society. Mario Salgado is the Founder and President of Salgado & Associates, and he is supported by two Senior Associates, Sally Lew and Meghan McVety, and administrative staff.

                                                                         

                                                     

Mario Salgado, President: Mario Salgado, President of Salgado & Associates, has over 25 years of experience working with culturally diverse nonprofit organizations, private institutions, and foundations. He has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the United Way County Committee for San Francisco, the San Francisco Board of Appeals and the SBC/Pacific Bell Universal Service Task Force. Mario has worked as an organizer with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, an event planner with CARECEN, the Executive Director of La Raza Centro Legal, a Program Coordinator with the National Economic Development and Law Center, and the Vice President and Director of Public Affairs of Vanguard Public Foundation. Through Salgado & Associates, Mario is employing his knowledge and skills, while convening talented associates to lend their collective skills to other institutions and organizations in diverse communities.

Sally Lew, Senior Associate: Prior to joining the Salgado & Associates team, Sally served on the program staff of a California-based private foundation for over 12 years where she developed and implemented grantmaking programs and initiatives, and managed a grants portfolio focused on children, youth and families and education. Currently, Sally is a board member of Stella Academy Middle School Charter (LAUSD), YMCA/Long Beach Community Development Branch, and Centro Latino Educación de Popular, as well as steering committee member of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP). Sally interned with the Teacher Corps working with incarcerated youth in California’s Juvenile Justice System while earning her secondary teaching credential. She also co-directed a Santa Monica-based peripatetic private school, a collaborative project of UCLA’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning and the School of Education. As a native of Los Angeles, Sally holds a bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University. With more than 35 years of management experience (administration and operations) in non-profit, for-profit and primary/secondary school settings (public, private, institutional) settings, Sally oversees a number of ongoing projects.

                

Meghan McVety, Senior Associate: Meghan McVety has worked as an independent consultant with community organizations since 1998 and with Salgado & Associates since 2001, where she has assisted with almost every client in some capacity. Meghan earned her Master of Public Administration degree from the University of San Francisco in 1999, where she focused on organizational structure and theory, strategic planning and evaluation. Prior to becoming a consultant, Meghan served as the Development Director of La Raza Centro Legal and San Francisco Women’s Centers, and for both organizations, she coordinated the logistics and fundraising of multiple large special events and significant improvements in the organizational development. Meghan is involved with nearly every project, and provides logistical support, material development, and coordination support.

Our expertise and experience is extensive and diverse, including capacity building support for members of Hispanics in Philanthropy, the planning and coordination of programs for Marguerite Casey Foundation, and strategic planning for Fiesta Educativa, Projects include:

 

§         Organizational assessments and capacity building support for grantees of The California Endowment operating in East Los Angeles, including individualized organizational audits and the creation of organizational development plans, many of which were converted into multi-year projects funded by The California Endowment.

 

§         Crisis intervention services for a Los Angeles-based organization (name withheld for privacy) facing bankruptcy and closure due to weak operational and management systems; facilitated meetings with the Board of Directors, funders, management and staff to devise a short-term plan to emerge from the crisis and a long-term plan to stabilize the organization.

 

§         Convening planning and coordination for Marguerite Casey Foundation grantees that are working with low-income families, including a national convening of 400 in 2005 and a series of five convenings in 2006 throughout the United States that ranged in size from 60 participants to 130 participants.

 

§         Ongoing program coordination and  planning of convenings and retreats for Californians Together, a statewide grassroots organization that is in the process of building its organizational capacity and for which Salgado & Associates provides facilitation and support for coalition and board members; planning and coordination of educational one-day workshops for 150 educators twice per year.

 

§         A fundraising event for Soledad Enrichment Action in August 2006; the event was a first annual gala and Salgado & Associates assisted with raising $100,000 and attracting nearly 350 guests by providing fundraising support, program guidance, public relations support, and logistical coordination, including a raffle.

 

§         Development and implementation of a leadership and capacity building project for a cohort of organizations in Southern California for Hispanics in Philanthropy during 2005 - 2006, which included organizational assessments, group trainings, and executive coaching.

 

§         Strategic planning for Familia Unida Living with Multiple Sclerosis, the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund, Oldtimers Foundation and Fiesta Educativa during 2005 – 2006.

 

§         Research and program development for AAA and Toyota in 2005 - 2006.

 

§         Conference planning and coordination for The California Wellness Foundation Environmental Health Conference in 2004 for nearly 100 participants.

 

§         A symposium for funders sponsored by the Levi Strauss Foundation in 2003 that was attended by over 150 participants and addressed the intersections of race, sexism and homophobia.

 

§         Logistical coordination and substance planning for a series of symposiums hosted in 2002-2003 by SBC California/Pacific Bell for community advocates to strengthen their technology capacity.
